Members of the Town of Elon Board of Aldermen voted May 12 to approve a special-use permit for the Blue Ridge Development company to build a new apartment complex with entrances on University Drive and the Cook Road extension.
The complex will share land from Elon and Gibsonville, and will include 240 units within Elon’s town limits. The special-use permit issued Tuesday will only apply to Elon’s portion of the property.
At a hearing on the matter in April, residents expressed concern about adding traffic to the road where Elon chemistry professor Eugene Gooch was killed cycling April 3.
The technical review document for the project states that Blue Ridge has agreed to pay the cost to extend the North Carolina Department of Transportation multi-use path paralleling the property on northbound University Drive.
This action will be taken in lieu of installing a new sidewalk on southbound University Drive.
Mayor Pro Tem Ron Klepcyk asked to add a condition that the developer be “as generous as possible” in extending the path.
The complex, which will be called The Legacy at Elon, will consist of 12 brick buildings not exceeding three stories in height.
“Welcome to Elon,” Mayor Jerry Tolley told the developer’s representatives present at the meeting.
