GIBSONVILLE — The Board of Aldermen voted unanimously May 4 to ban smoking in all town-owned buildings.
The board chose not to include town-owned vehicles in the ordinance.
The Guilford County Department of Public Health is asking all municipalities to pass no-smoking ordinances.
The board also voted to award the contract for a town hall renovation project to the lowest bidder, Central Builders, a Haw River firm.
The $23,800 project includes widening the customer window inside town hall and adding two work stations to help staff serve visitors more quickly. Also, new wall paneling will be installed in the lobby.
Mayor Lenny Williams told staff they will have to take the initiative to secure any money from the federal stimulus package. Department heads will have to apply through specific departments within the state and federal governments to seek the funds, and the process will be complicated, Williams said.
“We have to aggressively pursue this stimulus money,” he said.
Alderman Fred Barringer announced there will be a memorial service at the town cemetery at 2:30 p.m. May 17.
