You can “Help Stamp Out Hunger” Saturday by placing some cans of food near your mailbox.
Residents and businesses can place nonperishable food items near their mail receptacle by 9 a.m. Saturday for pickup by mail carriers.
“This is a great opportunity to give to the community, and we ask everyone to give what they can even if it’s a little bit,” Darlene Evans, food drive coordinator and letter carrier, said.
The campaign is made possible by a partnership between United Way, AFL-CIO, Campbell’s Soup, APWU and the United Postal Service Priority Mail Division.
The main items needed for donation are canned soups, cereal, canned meat, and canned fruits and vegetables.
The food will be donated to local food banks including the Salvation Army and Urban Ministry.
“Help Stamp Out Hunger” is the largest one-day food drive in American history. In 2008 the drive collected more 73.1 million pounds of food.
