Greek restaurant to open in downtown

Tuesday, April 28, 2009
(Updated 2:44 pm)

George K is back.

George Kourtsounis will be the chef for Opa! Taverna, a Greek restaurant set to open at 200 S. Elm St. in downtown Greensboro, the former home of Metro Delistro.

Work has begun on the space to create the feel of a Mediterranean courtyard. Kourtsounis says Opa! Taverna will serve reasonably-priced traditional Greek foods for lunch and dinner along with a selection of beer and wine.

Kourtsounis, who sold George K, his longtime restaurant and banquet space off Holden Road, says he will also offer some of his signature dishes.

Look for Opa! Taverna to open in the next few weeks.

It would be my fondest wish that George return to the roots of what has made him a great success for the last 20 years in Greensboro - keep it simple and delicious as his first establishment on Market Street... One of the true 'nice people' of Greensboro and fantastic food! I will be one of the first to visit! Good Luck my friend....

Peter, you must be kidding "one of the nicest people". You obviously don't know anything about him. You certainly haven't lent him any money, and you must not know any of his investors or his family. He obviously has no friends.

You all must not know this guy very well, but he left George K's in debt to his investors, left his children and wife penniless and flew to greece in hiding. This gangster owes his shirt and pants to many good people in greensboro who trusted him. One day he will pay the piper.
