Good Stuff: Despite her own hard times, woman gives back to new moms

GREENSBORO — When Kim Yarborough received a little bundle of baby clothes after giving birth at Women’s Hospital, she didn’t forget it.

Now, she’s gathering contributions to fill bundles for other mothers who need a little help.

“When you have the ability to give, you give,” she said.

That’s even after going through tough times recently, losing her job in September as the economy began to plummet and being unable to find work until January.

But during that time, she got help from neighbors, which also made her want to help others.

So, she has begun collecting infant’s and children’s clothing, something that has personal meaning to the mother of four.

“The hardest part is when you see your children’s clothes start to shrink and shrivel and not fit them,” she said. “I just want to help. I know how it is as a parent.”

Ginger Penley, director of volunteer services at Women’s Hospital, said the hospital traditionally gives out bundles to families in need that contain baby basics: onesies, blankets, sleepers and other clothing.

Nearly half of the families there live at the poverty level, she said, and the growing need is difficult to keep up with.

“You have new parents with the best intentions and, through no fault of their own, going from two incomes to one income to no income,” Penley said.

“And the baby’s still on the way.”

Yarborough is the first former recipient of the bundles that Penley knows of who has come back to help.

She already has dropped off one big bag of baby clothing at the hospital.

Yarborough, who has another baby on the way, said even little contributions can mean a lot to new mothers.

“It might be small,” she said. “But it’s one less worry when that lady lies down at night.”
