HIGH POINT — Police have charged a man with driving while impaired and felony hit and run  in connection with a wreck Thursday evening that killed a woman and injured eight other people.

Police on Friday identified the victim who died as Maria Maldonado , 35 , of High Point.

Two children, a 4-year-old  and a 14-year-old,  remain in stable condition at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, according to police. The other passengers were treated at High Point Regional Hospital  and released, police said.

Police say Timothy Lane Meadows , 32 , of 228 New Street  in High Point was driving a Toyota Camry northbound on Brentwood Street. The Camry ran a red light and collided with a Honda Odyssey  minivan traveling west on East Green Drive.

Meadows was held in the High Point Jail on $250,000 bond , according to the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office.
Police said additional charges could be filed next week.

A passenger in the Camry, Shelley Elizabeth Bowen , 23 , of 1606 E. Dogwood Drive  in Mebane , has been charged with aiding and abetting a DWI and was held Friday in the Guilford County jail in lieu of $1,000  bond, according to High Point Police.

After the two vehicles collided, the minivan flipped several times and several passengers were thrown from the vehicle, police and witnesses said. The Camry sped away but was recovered by police about a mile away, police said.

Maldonado was one of the passengers thrown from the minivan, police said.

The van was driven by Irma Mendez Altamirano , 32 , of High Point. The other adult occupant was Jovita Altamirano, 44 .
Three children of Irma Altamirano were passengers in the minivan: Jose Villafane, 12, Marbella Villafane, 14, and Naomi Villafane, a 6-month-old infant .

The other three children in the minivan, 11-year old Isis, 4-year-old Venus and 4-year-old Yave,  are Maldonado’s children, according to police.

Police could not specify on Friday which of the children remained hospitalized.

Police are still reconstructing the accident to determine which passengers were thrown from the van and which were removed by witnesses, said Lt. Steve Myers  of the High Point Police Department.

Police ask anyone with information about the collision to contact Lt. Walter Heaviland  at 883-3224 or High Point Crimestoppers at 889-4000.

I AM PRAYING FOR EVERYONE

The sad part about this is that a family member was killed and this guy will get out in about 5yrs. I can't beleive why our government will not give harsher punishments for DWI accidents. This guy should be having murder charges against him instead of the usual manslaughter. People know when you drink and drive you can kill some one, just as the same as someone holding a gun at someone and killing them. He obviously has no remorse since he ran. My prayers go out to the families effected by this.

Both of these societel dregs should get a minimum of 25 years in prison. This is the kind thing we've had to put up with for far too many eyars because of our spineless politicians, and "touchy feely" judges who should be held responsible for these people that they give a slap on the wrist.

I, too, am praying for everyone involved. This is senseless and unfortunately happens all too frequently... If you have an issue with sentencing or the bail amounts, you need look no further than the NCGS and our lawmakers - not the "touchy feely" judges (yes, they do have some say, but for the most part, sentencing is largely handled by the structured sentencing schedule that NC uses). DWI is its own animal when it comes to sentencing (as are drug offenses) - and the bail is set by the magistrates, NOT by the DA. If anyone has issues with the sentences being handed down, then plan on voting in 2 - 4 more years!

Agree about the light sentences. This guy has arrests and convictions going back to 2001. It appears that each was a slap on the wrist. You can check this on NC DOC's offender search http://webapps6.doc.state.nc.us/opi/offendersearch.do?method=view .
