HIGH POINT — Police have charged a man with driving while impaired and felony hit and run in connection with a wreck Thursday evening that killed a woman and injured eight other people.
Police on Friday identified the victim who died as Maria Maldonado , 35 , of High Point.
Two children, a 4-year-old and a 14-year-old, remain in stable condition at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, according to police. The other passengers were treated at High Point Regional Hospital and released, police said.
Police say Timothy Lane Meadows , 32 , of 228 New Street in High Point was driving a Toyota Camry northbound on Brentwood Street. The Camry ran a red light and collided with a Honda Odyssey minivan traveling west on East Green Drive.
Meadows was held in the High Point Jail on $250,000 bond , according to the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office.
Police said additional charges could be filed next week.
A passenger in the Camry, Shelley Elizabeth Bowen , 23 , of 1606 E. Dogwood Drive in Mebane , has been charged with aiding and abetting a DWI and was held Friday in the Guilford County jail in lieu of $1,000 bond, according to High Point Police.
After the two vehicles collided, the minivan flipped several times and several passengers were thrown from the vehicle, police and witnesses said. The Camry sped away but was recovered by police about a mile away, police said.
Maldonado was one of the passengers thrown from the minivan, police said.
The van was driven by Irma Mendez Altamirano , 32 , of High Point. The other adult occupant was Jovita Altamirano, 44 .
Three children of Irma Altamirano were passengers in the minivan: Jose Villafane, 12, Marbella Villafane, 14, and Naomi Villafane, a 6-month-old infant .
The other three children in the minivan, 11-year old Isis, 4-year-old Venus and 4-year-old Yave, are Maldonado’s children, according to police.
Police could not specify on Friday which of the children remained hospitalized.
Police are still reconstructing the accident to determine which passengers were thrown from the van and which were removed by witnesses, said Lt. Steve Myers of the High Point Police Department.
