Ex-Page player ineligible, mom says

Friday, April 24, 2009
(Updated Monday, April 27 - 2:14 pm)

GREENSBORO — The mother of a former Page High football player says school officials knew her son was ineligible to play sports there — and even let him live with an assistant coach last summer — before they reported him to the N.C. High School Athletic Association last month.

Que Tucker, deputy executive director of the NCHSAA, confirmed Friday that officials from Page reported using an ineligible player during the 2008 season.

Page reported the violation on March 12, Tucker said. It was unclear Friday why school officials waited to report the violation to the NCHSAA.

Tucker would not identify the student.

Patricia Hughes said the student is Gabe King, her son.

King transferred to Northern Guilford earlier this week. Hughes said Page football coach Kevin Gillespie and athletics director Rusty Lee let King play nearly half the season before dismissing him.

Hughes said she was told by Gillespie that King was being dropped for disciplinary reasons: an outburst in a class. Hughes said Page officials actually kicked him off the team to avoid being caught with an ineligible player in the postseason.

“They used my son and then attacked him when they were finished with him,” she said.  “It’s disgraceful that grown folks who are supposed to look out for young people have done everything but that.”

Page faces a to-be-determined punishment from the NCHSAA. Tucker said Friday options include a verbal reprimand, a fine or coaches being placed on probation.

She also said the ineligible student could be barred from playing at any public high school in the state next year.

School system officials did not return phone calls Friday, nor did Page principal Marilyn Foley and athletics director Rusty Lee. Gillespie declined to comment until the school system announces the violation.

Hughes said her family lived in the Page school district two years ago before moving to Winston-Salem in June 2008.

She said Gillespie and Lee led her to believe King was still eligible to attend Page this school year. While the family had moved, King was still living in Greensboro with his older sister, who lives in the Page district, on weekdays during the summer. Hughes said her son spent his weekends living at the home of Norman Weeks, a history teacher and assistant football coach at Page.

In Guilford County, a student’s high school is based on where his legal guardians live. King should have attended a school in Forsyth County.

Asked Hughes: “Maybe as parents we should have known better, but when your own coaches tell you not to worry, that your son is fine where he is and he’s even living with another coach, why shouldn’t you?”

She said she was hoping her son could  play at Page next year, but she said Gillespie began making negative comments about him to college recruiters. King is considered one of the best defensive lineman in the state and is being recruited by several Division I colleges.

Hughes said the family moved into Northern’s school district earlier this week. King started school on Tuesday.

Hughes said she’s worried that if her son does not get to play football at Northern or any other school, he might lose out on a college scholarship.

She said she and her husband will meet on Monday with Guilford County Schools athletics director Leigh Hebbard.

King is the second major football college prospect to transfer to Northern this year. Grimsley cornerback James Scales transferred in January.

Page’s disclosure Friday almost overshadowed the latest news out of Northern: Early Friday morning, Guilford County’s school board voted 9-1 to fire Louis Lawson, the Northern custodian who resigned two weeks ago along with the school’s principal and athletics director amid an investigation into the athletics department.

Lawson rescinded his resignation last week, saying he had done nothing wrong.

School board members fired him after a private meeting and would not discuss the vote.

Sources have told the News & Record the investigation centers on Northern’s football, baseball and boys basketball programs.

Northern principal Joe Yeager and athletics director Derrell Force resigned on April 10, the same day as Lawson.

Lawson said he believes his job became an issue because his son, Jacob Lawson, was the starting center for Northern’s 3-A state championship basketball team this season.

In August, Jacob Lawson transferred to Northern while his family still lived in Caswell County. Two weeks before school started, Yeager hired Louis Lawson as head custodian, which enabled his son to attend Northern.

On Friday, interim principal Pat Spicer said she heard rumors students were planning to protest the investigation, but it didn’t materialize.

“We spent all day making sure everything was taken under control,” she said. “You can be very well assured of that.”

Why was he kicked off the team, FOR ACTING OUT and all the other things that he did. You don't keep giving a kid chance after chance. This was not the first occurrence, maybe now he and his parents will take something from it and that is that the world does not revolve around them.

turkey, if I have seen it once I have seen it a 1,000 times. I don't care how well a of student athlete he is, the coaches should have never gave him preferential treatment. I can understand why his team members were upset. I am sure they were up-set with the coaches too. When ever you allow such behavior you are creating a monster. NIP it, that is what the bench is for. So you may not have your best player on the field that is where other team members have to assist. Ultimately you did not have him at the end of the season for whatever reasons.

He was benched on more than one occasion and made to run etc. He would act good for a couple of days and be really apologetic and then right back to his antics. The coaches tried to help a kid with potential meet his potential but no matter what they did he fought it and that is the only reason he was removed and no other like everyone is trying to say. Rosie can say she is close bur I promise you I am just as close if not closer. No I am not the AD

Let me assure you MR.(TURKEY)...You will never be as close to the situation as I am. Secondly Gabe King is not going to respect coaches or anyone that doesn't respect him. You can not talk to anybody anyway you want to a think that they are going to respect you. Maybe if you and the other coaches would have spoken to him with some common sense, he wouldn't blow up...Some of the coaches at Page have a ego problems..After King was kicked off the squad they wouldn't even speak to him in the hallways at school....What kind of grown men does that....That's the reason that coach got fired because he cursing those athletes out like it was no one's business...needless to say..Page is in the the wrong and is trying to cover up for letting King play..BOTTOM LINE.

Your right adults won't respect a child who acts the way that he did. I'll tell you one thing if he had not been babied his whole life and taught how to respect his elders there would not be a problem. I am done with this and washing my hands. It is impossible to argue with non responsible ignorance.

and what other things did he do since you know so much...was one of the reason you guys kicked him off the team is because he was staying for tutoring? Is it because he was late to practice sometimes? Hmmm? I wonder why? I wonder what was told to the mother....Was Gabe too smart to be getting tutoring? Did the coach feel like Gabe was too smart and should be coming to practice on time...Hmmm? Everyone will have their own version on the story but there is only one true one

rosierollins101 apparently you know of facts, I know the game. I do not know specifics of this particular situation. However, I know it is about power and control. I have a gut feeling that Page's coaches are not forthcoming and you can not believe a 100% of everything you read in the GSO News & Record.

I have a couple of things to say about this article...James Scales in not a Div. 1 Player, nor is he probably not in Northern's district. Since he was as freshmen in High School his father has shopped him around like his son was a pimp. He was At NEHS, Grimsley, and now at NG. Lawson's father did the same thing. all of you non-coaching citizens need t otalk to some of these coaches who lost players to Northern. Another way to find the truth is to wait unit lthese kids graduate and dont get into a school. They will tell you the truth then.

Just talked to a coach that says Scales is a Div 1 prospect.

If this kid is such a talent, then why would any coach in his right mind kick him off of the team. It makes no sense to me, especially if their collective goal is to win at all cost. They could have kept this kid under control. If you put together a plan for a kid to play illegally at your school, then you or your staff, as well as his parents, must have thought he was essential to a possible State Championship. Kicking him off team makes no sense to me unless you determined that the risk wasn't worth the reward. In other words, the coaching staff new they didn't have a State Championship team and the kid was more of a hindrance than a help. I just don't see that happening if this coaching staff is about winning at all cost. They would have played him, especially if the "outburst or outbursts" only took place in the football locker room. Even if he acted out in school, teachers would have been asked to be patient with him in the name school spirit and the possibility of a State Championship. I think the reality of it is that both parties are to blame. I'm not going to speculate on how much Paige's coaching staff new about this kid's residence. Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the school's AD verify eligibility.

I do know that parents shop their kids around and coaches recruit. I would disagree with the term "Pimp" used by someone who commented earlier. Parents are looking to get every possible advantage for their child. More exposure means more opportunity and winning means more exposure. If my goal is to help my kid get a college scholarship, then I want him to get a good education and be seen.

Hahahah wow. Spicer really you had everything under control. My a**. Good job putting "guards" at every door and leading all the students to the middle of the school where they could be monitored, while not allowing any students to leave. You have no support from most of the students and most of the parents, have fun the next five weeks.

I am glad you know who I am. By the way Jimmy Swaggard was a minister too. Look someone comes on here and writes about Spicer when it is not even in the conversation. Who cares about Spicer we are talking about Page and I did know who Spicer was, I was trying to say she isn't part of the conversation. You and all your cronies bring your so called evidence to fruition because everyone including myself since you know who I am are patiently waiting for it.

You still haven't told me who I am and again I promise you it is not coach G. Page will have a better season now that we have less problems, but I am still not who you want me to be sorry to disappoint. Good luck to this young man and I really do mean that but if he is going to succeed not only in football but in life he is going to have to grow up and take responsibility for his actions.

God Bless
