Local mothers of incarcerated children announced this week they have formed an organization to push for prison reform in Raleigh and beyond.

They call themselves Mothers For Justice. They’ll meet Saturday morning at a Greensboro Mason Lodge to hear from a local attorney and begin mapping out ways to lobby state legislators to pass laws that will ensure more reasonable prison sentences.

Meanwhile, they will brainstorm ways to help children stay in school or get jobs to prevent them from getting involved with the wrong crowd and end up in prison.

And that’s just the beginning, said Carolyn Stover, one of the organizers.

“We’re trying to put pieces together and set our goals to get our legislator to hear us out,’’ said Stover, a 56-year-old mother whose son is serving a 46-year prison term for armed robbery.

“Get some T-shirts, march and get legislators to hear us. We’re going to shout-out down there.’’

The meeting will start at 9 a.m. Saturday at the King David Mason Lodge, 3205 East Bessemer Ave., Greensboro.

For more information, call Stover at 989-7575 or e-mail her at sstovercarolyn@aol.com.
