Police want to help citizens form community watch groups in the greater Whitsett area.
“We believe it’s one of the most effective ways to reduce crime in the area,” Corporal J.C. Fuller said at the Town Council meeting April 14. Fuller is a crime prevention officer for the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office.
A meeting between Fuller and interested citizens has been tentatively set for May 12 at Town Hall.
Fuller said forming community watch groups could help prevent the spread of crime into Whitsett’s town limits.
The council expressed frustration over the news that Guilford County may start charging towns fees for animal control services.
County commissioners may discuss the possibility.
“We feel it’s unfair because it’s like we’re paying for it twice,” said Mayor Richard Fennell.
At the meeting, the council also voted to allow the Greater Whitsett Ruritan Club to run the town’s concession stand. In lieu of paying a portion of the proceeds, the club will pay for the electricity used by the stand.
The council also approved the county’s updated waste management plan.
