GREENSBORO — The fire department says sprinkler systems saved two apartment complexes from more serious damage within the past week.

In the most recent instance, a sprinkler put out a cooking fire in a three-story apartment building before Greensboro firefighters could arrive. The blaze at 3628 Belmont St. broke out shortly before 7 p.m. Wednesday night. The fire damage was contained to a stove and the cabinets and a microwave oven above the stove.

The apartment where the fire broke out sustained moderate water damage. The apartment underneath had a little water damage. The fire department estimated damage to the structure and its contents at about $22,000.

The fire department said cooking food was left unattended on the stove top. Both residents were housed elsewhere in the apartment complex.

On Friday, the fire department said sprinklers put out a fire at an apartment complex at 5418 W. Friendly Ave. Damage was minimal.

No injuries were reported in either fire.
