On April 29, the Haw River Valley American Viticultural Area will become the third federally granted appellation in North Carolina.
The area joins the Yadkin Valley and the Swan Creek inside the Yadkin Valley.
The Haw River Valley AVA covers approximately 868 square miles of the north central region of the state and encompasses Alamance County and portions of Caswell, Chatham, Guilford, Orange and Rockingham counties.
Wineries within the area include Grove Winery and Vineyards in Gibsonville, GlenMarie Vineyards and Winery in Burlington, Benjamin Vineyards and Winery in Saxapahaw, Iron Gate Vineyards and Winery in Mebane, Silk Hope Winery in Silk Hope and Wolfe Wines in Snow Camp. The region produces both European vinifera and native muscadine grapes.
The area will be celebrated with the Art on the Haw River Wine Trail, an event held May 2-3. For information, visit www.visitalamance.com.
