WINSTON-SALEM (AP) — Former President Jimmy Carter will speak later this month at a Baptist gathering at Wake Forest University.

Carter and poet Maya Angelou will speak at the Southeast regional meeting of the New Baptist Covenant, which will be held April 24 and 25 at the Winston-Salem school. Angelou is a professor at Wake Forest and will deliver the opening address, while Carter will give the closing address.

Other regional meetings were held earlier this year in Birmingham, Ala., and Liberty, Mo. Meetings are scheduled later this year in Norman, Okla., and Chicago.

The meetings grew out of the Celebration of a New Baptist Covenant, which was held last year in Atlanta. More than 15,000 people representing more than 30 Baptist organizations attended that meeting.
