ELON — A chemistry professor at Elon University was killed in a traffic accident Friday night while riding his bicycle on University Drive, north of campus.

Eugene Gooch, 57, was struck shortly before 7 p.m. by a vehicle also traveling west on University Drive, according to Elon police.

No charges had been filed by Saturday.

Gooch was an avid bicyclist who joined the faculty in 1988, according to a statement posted on the school’s Web site by university President Leo Lambert.

An active scholar and mentor to his students, Gooch specialized in chemical education and organic chemistry, and was an authority on nuclear magnetic resonance, natural products, organic synthesis and molecular modeling, Lambert said.

In memory of Gooch, there will be a "Gathering of Friends" at Elon at 8 p.m. today in the campus Center for the Arts.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m.

Tuesday at Elon Community Church on North Williamson Avenue.
