GREENSBORO — A man shot in a robbery Wednesday at a Randleman Road jewelry store is the subject of an investigation into illegal gambling according to Greensboro police.
Investigators are looking into allegations that 61-year-old Kim San was running an illegal lottery at C & S Jewelers at 2804-R Randleman Road, police confirmed Friday.
Police believe Kim would generate a random lottery number and customers would buy tickets to try to match that number and receive a cash prize, according to Capt. Mike Oates, head of the Vice Narcotics Division of the Greensboro Police Department.
Kim also is accused of allowing sports bets at the business, police said.
Officers seized a large amount of cash and receipts from the Randleman Road business and residence associated with Kim, Oates confirmed.
Oates said the investigation has been going on for several months and there are other suspects, although no one — including Kim — has been formally charged with any crime.
He declined to elaborate further on the investigation because it is ongoing.
Kim was shot just before 1 p.m. Wednesday when two masked men attempted to rob the store.
A struggle ensued and Kim was shot. He was taken to Moses Cone Hospital with non-life threatening injuries and has since been released.
Kim’s wife and daughter were also in the store at the time of the shooting, but were not injured. Kim’s wife and daughter are listed as owners of the store.
Anyone with information about the shooting or activity at the store is urged to call Crime Stoppers at 373-1000.Callers remain anonymous and are eligible for a cash reward.
