DANVILLE, Va. (AP) — Corning Inc. will close its Danville plant by the end of the year, putting about 200 people out of jobs.
The company said in a statement today that the economic downturn continues to affect all of Corning's businesses and markets.
Corning spokeswoman Sarah Horvath says the plant closing is part of a previously announced plan to reduce the global work force by 3,500.
The Danville plant opened in 1962 and manufactures a variety of niche hot-glass products.
The Danville area had the highest unemployment rate in the state in January, at 14 percent.
