Memphis recovers to get second-round win over Maryland

MEMPHIS 89, MARYLAND 70: Tyreke Evans scored 19 points and Memphis shot a sizzling 70 percent in the first half, awakening from its first-round slumber to Maryland 89-70 Saturday in the West Regional in Kansas City, Mo.

The second-seeded Tigers (33-3) knocked the Terps (21-14) on the ropes with a 9-0 run in the opening minutes and led by as many as 23 while mounting a 53-33 halftime lead. Shawn Taggart had a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds.

Greivis Vasquez had 18 points to lead Maryland.

CONNECTICUT 92, TEXAS A&M 66: In Philadelphia, A.J. Price scored 27 points, Jeff Adrien had 23 and Connecticut dominated Texas A&M from the opening tip with Hall of Fame coach Jim Calhoun back on the bench.

Stanley Robinson had 12 points for the top-seeded Huskies (29-4), who will play Purdue in the West Region semifinals in Glendale, Ariz.

PURDUE 76, WASHINGTON 74: JaJuan Johnson scored 22 points and had two huge blocks in the final minute as fifth-seeded Purdue held off a frantic charge from Washington in Portland, Ore.

The Boilermakers (27-9) advanced to their first regional semifinals since 2000.

EAST REGIONAL

VILLANOVA 89, UCLA 69: Dante Cunningham scored 18 points in Philadelphia, helping Villanova reach the round of 16 for the fourth time in five years.

Corey Fisher and Reggie Redding each had 13 points for the third-seeded Wildcats (28-7), who will play Duke on Thursday.

Josh Shipp led UCLA (26-9) with 18 points and Darren Collison had 15.

SOUTH REGIONAL

OKLAHOMA 73, MICHIGAN 63:Bulling through double teams and soaring in for vicious dunks, Blake Griffin finished with 33 points and 14 rebounds to power Oklahoma past Michigan in Kansas City, Mo.

Griffin dominated the undersized Wolverines (21-14) to help the second-seeded Sooners (29-5) advance to next week's South Regional semifinals against today's Syracuse-Arizona State winner.

GONZAGA 83, WESTERN KENTUCKY 81: In Portland Ore., Freshman Demetri Goodson streaked the length of the court and made a short, running bank shot with nine-tenths of a second left, lifting fourth-seeded Gonzaga over Western Kentucky.

Gonzaga (28-5) advanced to the South Region semifinals to play top-seeded North Carolina on Friday in Memphis, Tenn.

Western Kentucky (25-9) was led by Orlando Mendez Valdez with 25 points.
