Officer found guilty in assault case

GREENSBORO — A Greensboro police officer was found guilty of two counts of assault on a female Friday in Guilford County District Court .

In delivering his verdict, Chief District Court Judge Joseph Turner said he also was disappointed in the police leaders at the party for allowing the apparently alcohol-fueled assaults to take place.

“Reluctantly and sadly, I find you guilty on both charges,” Turner said to Officer A.J. Blake .

Blake was accused of grabbing, pushing and kicking his girlfriend and of grabbing another officer’s girlfriend by her neck. The party, attended mainly by police and their spouses or dates, was held Jan. 16 at the Greensboro Police Club at 524 Air Harbor Road. The assaults were said to have occurred as the party was ending early Jan. 17 .

Blake’s two-week sentence will be suspended for three years as long as Blake completes a domestic violence training course and commits no further assaults on his girlfriend Sandra Sanchez or Lorraine Galloway.

Blake’s attorney, Ken Free , notified Turner after the sentencing that he would appeal the decision to Superior Court.

All the witnesses called who had been at the party testified that they had been drinking and that Blake and Sanchez had an argument.

Officer C.M. Schultheis and Galloway, both guests at the party, testified that they saw Blake assault Sanchez as the pair was leaving the party. Schultheis said he saw Blake push Sanchez’s back and Galloway said she saw Blake kick Sanchez outside of the police club.

Sanchez herself said she had not been assaulted but had stumbled outside of the club when her high-heeled shoe became stuck between wooden planks on the porch. A crime scene investigator testified that she hadn’t seen any dirt or marks on Sanchez’s white jacket or any bruises to indicate she had been kicked.

But Turner said he didn’t find Sanchez to be credible.

Galloway said Blake turned on her when she remarked on the kick she saw him deliver to Sanchez.

“I stood in the doorway and said, 'You’re not going to do that anymore,’” Galloway said. “He turned toward me and that’s when he grabbed me by the throat — he had a strong grip — and threw me back into the police club building.”

Blake testified that Galloway was acting aggressively toward him and he pushed her back to defend himself.

Blake joined the police department June 16, 2001. He has been suspended without pay since Jan. 20. He is assigned to the investigative support bureau and works on the gang unit.

The Greensboro Police Club is a philanthropic group that raises money for youth athletics and other community programs. The Jan. 16 party was not associated with the club’s activities, according to a club official.

Great, just what our troubled youth needs. Ahmed Blake choking them out for wearing red t-shirts. What is Let 'em Go Joe Turner gonna do when Blake rapes another officer in the back of the jumpout van? Another year probation? Is Blake going to add this to his discrimination lawsuit? "I can't beat up girls cuz I'm black?"

gboro84, why are you being so ignorant?

Gang members are indeed "troubled youth", and they don't get choked out for wearing colors. They can choose to follow the advice of gang unit officers and accept referrals to productive support groups, or continue a life of crime. Blake's personal life has nothing to do with that, nor did he have anything to do with last year's sexual assault allegation. Due to his conviction, Blake will have his NC law enforcement certification revoked once all appeals are exhausted, so his career is effectively over.

"Let 'em Go Joe Turner" convicted Blake of domestic assault despite his girlfriend contradicting it. While I don't disagree, this charge is normally not even attempted for prosecution by Doug Henderson's ultra lenient DA's Office when the victim refuses to cooperate. Henderson insisted on this occasion in a bit of twisted politics, and Turner convicted. I fail to see leniency on Turner's part, despite his reputation with non-police defendants.

One officer messes up badly at an innocent party, gets convicted, loses job...sounds fair to me. Aside from the fact this happened to begin with, I'm not sure what there is to complain about

Don't you think it is odd that the reporter failed to mention that this is one of the officers who is suing the Greensboro taxpayers for discrimination? Don't you also find it odd that this reporter failed to point out that this officer is also one of the officers that a female officer accused of assault/rape in the back of a city owned van while he was on duty and being paid by the taxpayers? Are you surprised?

Uhh, jeanie, as I said already above, Blake IS NOT involved in any way in last year's sexual assault allegation by a female police officer. I'm not going to defend him at all for this case, but it has NOTHING to do with the pending lawsuit either. He messed up badly and is paying for it properly, but let's not go off the deep end and pile a bunch of other stuff on him. These comments only spread ignorant mis-information, and show a great misunderstanding of recent events. Stop the madness.

Everyone so quick to think this man is terrible. I know him and very glad I do! This officers efforts saved my life when I was in property management. Yes, he made a mistake getting intoxicated and acting out. That does NOT take away from the fact he is a good police officer. This was something he did, I am sure by accident due to have a few too many drinks in his PERSONAL time. We ALL make mistakes, and that is exactly what that is a mistake that I am sure he regrets. Good Luck....Officer Blake!
