The “diaper closet” is empty.
Not a Pampers or Huggie in sight.
This morning, two families seeking this costly, but basic, necessity have been turned away from FaithAction International House, the nonprofit that keeps a supply on hand for clients, who are struggling to survive the recession and provide for their children.
Many of those clients are among the huge numbers of immigrants and refugees who are out of work locally.
Mark Sills, executive director at FaithAction, is asking houses of worship to pass on the need to members during this weekend’s gatherings.
“Many of these do not qualify for any kind of unemployment compensation,” Sills said.
People who donate to charity might not normally think of picking up diapers when they consider giving. But the non-profit’s closet of cloth and disposable types for its Immigrant Assistance Center helps provide a measure of care to “innocent babies” who need them, Sills said.
And, since most of their clients arrive in the afternoon and early evening looking for help — “We know that we will disappoint many families today,” Sills said Friday morning.
FaithAction is located at 705 N. Greene St. Sills can be reached at 379-0037.
