RALEIGH (AP) — The chancellor at the Chapel Hill campus of the University of North Carolina says layoffs and more budget cuts will be necessary because of a drastic decline in state revenue.
UNC Chancellor Holden Thorp said in a notice to employees today that he ordered all departments to prepare 5 percent cuts for their 2009-2010 budgets. Thorp said the cuts should be ready for the start of the fiscal year July 1. (Read the chancellor's message here.)
The state, which supports all 16 public universities in North Carolina, has an estimated $3.4 billion budget shortfall for the coming fiscal year.
Thorp said layoffs shouldn't include tenured faculty or those in line for tenure.
A university spokesman says it isn't known yet how many employees could lose their jobs.
