BURLINGTON - Timing and a quick response by firefighters helped contain a fire to one classroom at E.M. Holt Elementary School on Sunday afternoon.
Someone pulled into the parking lot of the school on N.C. 62 shortly after 1 p.m. Sunday and noticed flames and smoke coming from a modular classroom behind the building. She called 911.
Firefighters from E.M. Holt Fire Department were first on the scene.
"We had heavy flames coming from the right side of the building," said Fire Chief Mark Fuqua. "We made an initial attack on it and had it knocked down in 30 to 40 minutes."
Although there are four modular classrooms clustered together behind the school and connected by covered walkways, the fire was kept from spreading and no one was injured.
Fire officials think the fire started in a heating unit on the right side of the fifth-grade classroom. The blaze burned a hole in the roof and destroyed the classroom and most of its contents.
