RALEIGH (AP) — North Carolina, which lost in the semifinals in the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament, was pegged the No. 1 seed in the South Region on Sunday, one of three in-state teams in the NCAA men's basketball title chase.
The Tar Heels (28-4) won't have far to travel for their first-round game. They will be facing 16th-seeded Radford, champion of the Big South Conference, in a first-round game at the Greensboro Coliseum on Thursday.
Duke (28-6) captured the ACC's automatic spot in the 65-team field when it defeated Florida State in the tournament championship on Sunday in Atlanta. The Blue Devils were seeded second in the East Region and will play No. 15 Binghamton, champion of the America East Conference, also in Greensboro on Thursday.
Wake Forest (24-6), which lost to Maryland in its first game in the ACC tournament, was seeded fourth in the Midwest Regional and will play No. 13 Cleveland State, which won the Horizon League, in Miami on Friday.
As was expected, Davidson (26-7) was left out of the field after failing to win the Southern Conference tournament title and the automatic NCAA berth that comes with it. Last season, the Wildcats fascinated the nation with scorer Stephen Curry and nearly reached the Final Four.
