Dudley defeats Forestview 60-58 for 3-A title

RALEIGH (AP) — Helen Terry made a go-ahead free throw with 1:27 remaining and Greensboro Dudley held on for a 60-58 victory over Gastonia Forestview in the Class 3-A North Carolina High School Athletic Association girls championship on Saturday.

Breonna Patterson scored 23 points to lead the Panthers (30-3), who trailed 56-52 with less than three minutes remaining. Terry, the game's MVP, added 16 points to help Dudley finish the season with a 23-game winning streak and its first state championship.

"We got a win. We won the state title," Dudley coach Kris Britton said. "It may not have been the prettiest win, but we hung in there and persevered. We did exactly what it took to win the game, and that's all I can ask of them."

Shannon Smith scored 31 points on 12-of-37 shooting to lead the Jaguars (27-5), who were making their first appearance in a state final. Ashley Pratt, who finished with 14 points, missed a free throw that would have tied the score at 69 with 34.6 seconds remaining.

Terry added a free throw with 17.9 seconds left, and Smith failed to get off a shot as time expired.
Neither team led by more than six points in the game, which featured 17 ties and 14 lead changes. The lead changed hands on five consecutive possessions at the end of the third quarter, with Patterson giving Dudley a 46-45 edge on a runner at the buzzer.

"We were in pretty good shape, but you've got to play it out until the end," Forestview coach Ken Beaty said. "It just wasn't our night. It didn't work out to our advantage."

The Panthers won by increasing their defensive pressure on Smith late in the game. Smith scored 19 of Forestview's 24 points during one stretch in the second half, but Dudley hounded her with double teams in the backcourt to force three turnovers in the final two minutes.
