N.C. A&T seniors Loreal Smith and Alexandria Spruiel are headed back to the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Nationals at Texas A&M today and Saturday. Smith, a hurdler from Tallahassee, Fla., is a two-time MEAC indoor 60-meter hurdle champion. Spruiel, a sprinter from Detroit, owns two 400-meter and 1600-meter relay titles.
BASEBALL
GARDNER-WEBB 8, N.C. A&T 3: Redshirt freshman Aaron Haynes pitched seven strong innings in Gardner-Webb's win over N.C. A&T (3-10) at War Memorial Stadium. Haynes scattered six hits, fanned two and allowed two earned runs in his first career start.
COLLEGE FOOTBALL
ELON: Elon will begin spring practice March 30 at the Hunt Field and Tucker Field practice facility at 4 p.m. The 15-session schedule concludes with the annual Phoenix spring game at 3 p.m. April 25 at Rhodes Stadium.

NORTH CAROLINA: Top-ranked North Carolina, California, Syracuse and Ohio State will tipoff the next men's basketball season in the 2009 Coaches vs. Cancer Classic at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Championship Round tickets will go on sale today at noon. The tournament will include a 12-team field with games at four regional sites (North Carolina, California, Ohio State and Syracuse) between Nov. 9-13. Championship round games will be played Nov. 19-20. Tickets may be purchased by calling Ticketmaster at (212) 307-7171 or through Ticketmaster.com.

NO. 4 NOTRE DAME 5, NO. 3 DUKE 2: Third-ranked Duke dropped a decision to No. 4 Notre Dame in Orlando, Fla.
SWIMMING
GSA: The Greensboro Swimming Association's Hannah Martin placed third in the girls 200-yard backstroke at the Speedo Southern Zone Eastern Section Senior Championships, a nine-state regional swim meet held in Cary, March 5-8. She also placed sixth in the women's 100-yard backstroke. Her times qualified her to swim at several national-level competitions, including the World Championship Trials. Martin, 15, is a freshman at the Early College at Guilford.
GOLF
HARRIS TEETER SENIOR TOUR: Tour veteran Willie Hendricks of Durham emerged as the winner in the championship flight of the Harris Teeter Senior Amateur Tour event held at The Champions Course at Bryan Park. Hendricks shot a 4-over 76 on the 6,651-yard track, while Tour rookie, George Tsiolkas of Winston-Salem, broke out of a four-way tie to claim second place. Frank Miller of Summerfield, David Shackelford of Cary, and Apex' David Williams all matched Tsiolkas' total of 77, but came out second best in the scorecard playoff.
