Update: Day care owner arrested after child dies

Thursday, March 12, 2009

HAW RIVER — The owner of an Alamance County day care was charged today with involuntary manslaughter after a child in her care died on Monday.

State officials earlier this week ordered the day care closed.

Haw River police have not released the name or the cause of death of the 1-year-old child, who died Monday afternoon after being taken to the hospital from the Palmer-Leigh Small World Daycare at 501 E. Main St.

Police said they responded to a report of a child not breathing. The State Bureau of Investigation also investigated.

Judy A. Harper, the day care owner, was arrested Thursday and charged with involuntary manslaughter, police said in a news release.

The N.C. Department of Health and Human Services ordered the day care center closed Tuesday and suspended the center's license.

My children attended Ms. Judy's center for five years and I never worried about her safety. My child loves Ms. Judy and I would feel comfortable leaveing her in her care still to this day. She and all involved are in our thoughts and prayers. The news should not try to slanderher the safty of the daycare when it received a 98% grade from the state.
