Bills filed to increase Greensboro vehicle tax

(Updated Thursday, March 12 - 8:10 am)

Bills have been filed in the House and Senate to allow Greensboro to raise the city's annual tax on vehicles to $16. Currently, the city charges $10 per vehicle.

Proceeds from the tax could only be used to fund the city's public transportation system. Rep. Pricey Harrison introduced the House version. Sen. Katie Dorsett introduced the bill in the Senate.

Both are Democrats. "It's a little bit more fair of a funding mechanism than raising a sales tax," Harrison said.

Let the tax increases begin. Have to make up short falls some place. Don't cut spending just raise taxes.

The city of Greensboro currently charges $10 in fees ($5 dedicated to the city's general fund and $5 to the transportation fund) per vehicle, not $5 as Mr. Binker reported. The law change would empower the city council to raise the total to $16 with the additional money ($6 per vehicle) being dedicated to the transportation fund. It is likely that the increase could generate an additional $1.2 million in revenue annually. Mr. Binker could have been more accurate in his reporting if he had read and understood the legislation that Rep. Harrison has proposed.
