ELON (AP) — Ernie Nestor has stepped down after six seasons as Elon basketball coach.

Athletic director Dave Blank said in a statement Monday night that the school had begun a search for a new coach, and team spokesman Matt Eviston confirmed later that night that the 62-year-old Nestor resigned.

He was 67-117 in six seasons at Elon. The Phoenix were 11-20 this season and finished fifth in the six-team North Division of the Southern Conference.

Their season ended with a 79-78 loss to Chattanooga in the quarterfinals of the league tournament. Last year, Elon advanced to the Southern Conference title game, where the Phoenix lost to Davidson.

The longtime Wake Forest assistant and former George Mason coach took over at Elon in 2003-04.
