GREENSBORO — Carolyn Swords scored 16 of her 20 points in the second half Thursday night to lead Boston College past Miami 76-59 in the first round of the ACC women's tournament.

Corey Rusin added 12 points and Ayla Brown finished with 11 for the seventh-seeded Eagles (20-10).

Boston College shot 53 percent in claiming the school's second ACC tournament victory, advancing to face 12th-ranked Florida State (24-6), the second seed, in a quarterfinal today at 6 p.m.

Freshman Shenise Johnson had 13 points to lead Miami (13-17). The Hurricanes had a miserable stretch of shooting in the first half and went on to their sixth straight loss — and their third this season against the Eagles.

Miami had trouble finding an answer when it counted for the 6-foot-6 Swords, as Boston College took control of the game by pounding the ball to her on the block.

The nation's most accurate shooter, Swords entered hitting nearly 69 percent of her shots. She was 10-of-12 from the field this time, hitting four layups early in the second half, when the Eagles hit seven of their first nine shots -- all layups -- and prevented the Hurricanes from making any sort of run. Miami didn't get closer than eight in the final 14 minutes.
