CHAPEL HILL (AP) - More than 1,000 people have gathered at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to remember slain student body president Eve Carson.

Chancellor Holden Thorp spoke during a ceremony Thursday, one year after Carson's brutal death. Thorp said to remember the Athens, Ga. native for her commitment to community service and her excitement about life.

The 22-year-old Carson had been shot five times, including once in the head, when she was found in a residential street near campus early March 5, 2008. Authorities have said she was kidnapped from her home and robbed at gunpoint before she was killed.

Twenty-two-year-old Demario Atwater and 18-year-old Laurence Lovette are charged with first-degree murder. Atwater faces the death penalty. Lovette won't face execution because he was under age 18 when the shooting occurred.
