GREENSBORO — Guilford County Schools has extended the school year by one more day to make up a missed day.

Schools were closed Tuesday, and the school district announced today that June 15 will be the make-up day for students on the traditional calendar.

Earlier this week, the district said that it would use June 12 as the make-up day for Monday.

Schools opened two hours late Wednesday after being closed for the past two days because of snow and ice.

These are the makeup days for Monday and Tuesday:

* School on the traditional calendar — June 12, June 15

* The Early College at Guilford — March 9, March 10

* Year-round schools — June 15, June 16

* Extended-year schools — No make-up day is needed

The Middle Colleges at Bennett, N.C. A&T and Greensboro College will make up missed days on May 26 and May 27. The district has not yet decided on make-up days for the three Middle Colleges on the GTCC campuses in Greensboro, High Point and Jamestown.

Do we really need to make the school year longer? What happened to the extra days that used to be built into the calendar? Is there no way to take out some of the workdays? Our boys were planning to go to the beach with their grandparents on June 11 and not come back until June 14. What do we tell them now? What about the money that had to be paid to reserve the room?

You apparently haven't looked at the calendar, since there were clearly days built into it for inclement weather. February 20 was the make-up day for January 20, and June 11 makes up for February 3. Unfortunately, this weather comes late enough that only one off day (other than spring break and Memorial day) remains. That one workday comes at the end of the grading period, so it's protected to allow teachers to get work done.

If you had looked at the calendar, you would have seen that these days were next in line as make-up days. So why on Earth did you rent a place with a non-refundable deposit for those dates?

It is not my intent to start a huge "fuss" over this issue. It was my intent to show how this is causing problems for families.

We did look at the calendar, however, no one can anticipate what the weather will do. Maybe the real question to ask is if all of the teacher workdays are necessary? Do we really need teacher workdays the day after the grading period ends?

If you look at the calendar you will notice several months where the school had workdays or vacation days within a two week time period. For example, November 4 the schools were closed for election day and then November 11 for Veteran's Day, then the 26th for vacation followed by the 27th and 28 for Thanksgiving. In October the 22nd was an early release day with the following Monday, the 27th, being a teacher workday.
