Snow day adds school day in June

They might be enjoying it today, but the heavy snow will add one more day of class to end of the school year for Guilford County Schools students. Students will make up today on June 12.

Teachers had the option of taking Monday off but some braved the roads to get a little work done. Nathaniel Degraffinreaidt teaches Masonry at Grimsley High School and was in the building before 8:30 this morning. Degraffinreaidt said snow days give most teachers a chance to get caught up grading, planning and even some housekeeping.

"If I can get here on days like this I come in," Degraffinreaidt said. "There's always something I can do."

He added that the day following snow day can be pretty busy as everyone tries to get back on schedule.

School officials are already planning for more delays tomorrow. Jeff Harris, the school system's transportation director, said he and his staff will check roads this evening as well as get information from N.C. DOT to have a decision about Tuesday classes by 10 p.m.

"If we had to make a decision right now, I'd recommend we not go but a lot can change in 10 hours," Harris said.

If classes are canceled students will make that day up on June 15.

A half dozen Page High School sophomores made their way to the St. Pius X construction site at North Elm and Kimberly streets Monday morning. Their goal: to sled down a 20-foot high pile of dirt at the construction site, steep and glistening white — at the beginning. Their first tracks left muddy orange gashes down the dirt pile.

Cameron Klass, 15, and Sparks Anderson, 15, roused their friend, Kaki Kleisch, 15, by throwing snowballs at her window first thing Monday morning. The three girls grabbed some sleds and as they headed down the street, they were joined by other friends from the neighborhood: Hannah Kenny, 15, Alice Robbins, 16, and Sofia Milan, 15.

The girls sledded down the pile enough times to get half covered in mud, screaming down the short, steep slopes. At the bottom they stopped and threw fluffy, grapefruit-sized snowballs at one another, then headed back down the street.
