Editorial: Make snow safe and enjoyable

Monday's picture-perfect snow was best observed from a living room window or a sled zipping downhill.

Streets and highways, not so much.

It had been more than five years since a significant snowfall covered the Triad. This storm was very accurately forecast, giving plenty of time to build anticipation and make preparations.

Clearing streets was complicated, however, by the heavy rain that preceded the falling temperature. Early application of road salt would have been wasted. Later, soft snow layered over freezing surfaces. Scraping left an icy crust on many roads Monday morning, and a little afternoon thawing merely promised refreezing in the expected bitter cold of early today. The same can happen again Wednesday morning, meaning Triad children might spend more time out of school this week than in.

Still, highways and major roads for the most part were dealt with effectively Monday morning. Careful drivers were able to proceed safely. Unfortunately, some always forget how quickly a mistake or lapse in concentration can turn into an accident. Some learn the lesson that SUVs aren't perfectly reliable on snowy roads. And a few are just reckless, putting themselves and others in danger.

Because snow events of this severity rarely occur here, lessons have to be relearned -- and not only about driving. Kids out sledding might not remember how important it is to choose a hill that doesn't have hidden dangers lying just below an inviting blanket of snow. They might not understand they can't trust any layer of ice over even a small pond. They might not realize how quickly they can become overly chilled, especially if their clothing, socks, gloves or hats get wet. Adults have to watch for these hazards.

Everyone also should be mindful of elderly or shut-in neighbors. It's a good idea to check on them to make sure their heat is working and they have other necessities.

With proper consideration, this week's impressive snow can prove to be safe and enjoyable for just about everyone -- as long as the kids eventually get back in school.

I'd like to thank the City of Greensboro's road crews for their hard work Monday morning and throughout the day. I think they did a great job under tough circumstances. Thanks, y'all.
