CHARLOTTE (AP) - A tough economy hasn't stopped a Swedish-based furniture company from opening its first store in the Carolinas.
The Charlotte Observer reported on Wednesday that an estimated 2,000 people had already packed into IKEA's new 356,000-square-foot store in Charlotte about 30 minutes after its official opening.
Several people had camped in front of the store for days and traffic was reported to be heavy on roads leading to the store.
The blue-and-yellow box-looking store, now one of only 36 IKEA stores in the country, is the size of six football fields and is the first IKEA between Washington, D.C., and Atlanta.
