Short Orders: Wine-tasting benefits Kids Path

Wednesday, February 18, 2009
(Updated 9:45 am)

Corks for Kids Path, a wine-tasting benefit for Kids Path of Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro, will be held from 7 to 11 p.m. Feb. 27 at Revolution Mill Studios, 900 Revolution Drive in Greensboro.

"The inaugural event was a huge success," Paul Russ, director of Resource Development for Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro, says of last year's event.

This year's event features wines from Zeto Wine and Cheese Shop paired with chocolates from Loco for Coco. There will also be a sample of brews from Natty Greene's Brewing Co., hors d'oeuvres from Pepper Moon and a silent auction.

And if that's not enticing enough, for $25, guests get a box containing a wine tool and a "diamond." Here's the catch: only one pouch contains a real diamond donated by Carlyle & Co., the rest are faux gems.

Admission to the event is $50. Call 621-2500 or visit www.corksforkidspath.org.

Fresh bread on the go

Dan Farley of Great Harvest Bread Company has once again set up a retail outpost in the bakery's mobile trailer.

This time, the trailer is parked in the parking lot of Thrill of the Hunt at 3122 Battleground Ave. in Greensboro, just north of the intersection of Pisgah Church Road.

Farley says the trailer will dispense the bakery's daily fresh whole wheat breads, cinnamon rolls, muffins, brownies and tea cakes. But if you're just looking for a java fix, better keep moving. The trailer isn't offering any beverages right now.

The trailer is open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday. You can reach the trailer by phone at 404-4257 or for more information, call Great Harvest Bread Company (2715-A Grandview Ave.) at Friendly Center, 855-3853.

New Orleans items offered

The menu at Printworks Bistro (702 Green Valley Road, Greensboro; 379-0699; www.printworksbistro.com) leans towards French cuisine, but on Feb. 24, Chef Bart Ortiz dons Mardi Gras beads and offers recipes from The Big Easy, including Shrimp and Chicken Gumbo ($5); Flash Fried Oysters ($11); Blackened Red Fish over Beans and Rice ($12 lunch, $26 dinner); Grillades and Grits ($11 lunch, $21 dinner), sauted veal over polenta; and Bananas Foster Bread Pudding ($6).

Pancakes for a cause

The International House of Pancakes is holding its annual National Pancake Day Celebration on Tuesday.

From 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., patrons can stop by any IHOP and get a free short stack of buttermilk pancakes by making a donation to the Children's Miracle Network.

Pancake Day is derived from an old English tradition on Shrove Tuesday when pancakes were eaten to use up stores of dairy and eggs before Lent.

Personal pizzas to go

Hungry Howie's is offering Your Pizza, Your Way, a promotion that lets customers purchase a $3.99 personal 10-inch pizza that includes a choice of one of eight crust flavors and one topping.

The offer is good through May 31. To find a pizza shop near you, visit www.hungryhowies.com.
