GREENSBORO - Police are investigating an assault on a woman who was found today with severe injuries in a Smith Homes apartment.
Chelsia Whitsett, 19, was rushed to Moses Cone Hospital about 3:30 p.m., where she is in critical condition.
Police Capt. Chris Walker said the woman's cousin contacted the Greensboro Housing Authority after being unable to reach her.
Housing officials went to the home at 1806 Hudgins Drive, Apt. A, and found the injured woman. Police said she was assaulted, but are not elaborating on her injuries.
Lt. Brian James said a small child was also found in the home, but was uninjured. The child has been placed with relatives.
James said the attack is believed to have happened several hours before Whitsett was found.
Neighbors reported last seeing the woman outside her apartment around 2 p.m. on Thursday, but had few other details about her other than she had recently moved to the area and that she kept to herself.
"I came outside this afternoon and heard a girl scream - that's when I knew something was not right," said Jeanaya Caldwell, who lives nearby.
