GREENSBORO — A fire at a local chemical plant did $300,000 in damages Thursday afternoon.
The Greensboro Fire Department said today that the blaze on the roof of the Sherwin-Williams Chemical Coatings plant was most likely started accidentally by a roofing company using heat guns on the roof. The plant at 113 Stage Coach Trail was having its roof replaced.
The two-alarm fire was reported at 1:29 p.m. by callers who saw heavy, black smoke and fire on the roof of the plant.
A second alarm for more firefighters was sent out about 1:44 p.m., in part because of the windy conditions. Firefighters initially had trouble getting water from an aerial truck onto the roof because of the high wind, but were able to contain the blaze to the roof.
The fire did not get inside the building, said David Douglas, assistant chief of the Greensboro Fire Department, and there was no release of hazardous chemicals from the building.
No one was injured.
A company spokesman said the plant employs 70 people who make wood coatings for kitchen cabinets and furniture.
