GREENSBORO - A driver led officers from five law enforcement agencies on a high- speed chase from Greensboro to Asheboro on Thursday, the Highway Patrol said.

The driver was arrested after a head-on crash and a foot chase.

The chase began about 2:30 p.m. Thursday when a Greensboro police officer at West J.J. Drive and South Elm-Eugene Street spotted a silver Ford Ranger pickup without a license plate, Trooper C.D. Knox said.

The pickup matched the description of a vehicle that had been reported stolen, Knox said.

The officer tried to stop the pickup, but the driver sped away, heading south on South Elm-Eugene Street, Knox said.

According to radio communications among police officers during the chase, the Ranger left the city and traveled through Guilford County and into Randolph County.

Trooper C.R. Azelton placed stop sticks across Business 220 at the Randleman city limits.

The stop sticks deflated both of the pickup's right-side tires, but the driver continued into Asheboro, Knox said.

At the intersection of Business 220 and Vision Drive in Asheboro, the pickup drove across the center of the road and collided head-on with an oncoming car.
No one was injured in that crash, Knox said.

Greensboro police arrested Rainey Hope Crosby, 29, of 512 Room 120 Farragut St., in connection with the chase.

He was charged with fleeing to elude arrest, possession of a stolen motor vehicle and numerous traffic charges including: careless and reckless driving; driving 90 miles per hour in a 35 mile per hour zone; and running several red lights.

Crosby also had outstanding warrants out of High Point on assault by pointing a gun, unrelated to Thursday's incident.

He was being held on a $30,000 bond at the Guilford County jail in Greensboro
Thursday night.

Also charged was Joseph Allan Ruggerio, 24, of 818 Waugh St., who allegedly transferred the stolen truck to Crosby, officials said.

The vehicle was reported stolen from Norside Imports at 2807 High Point Road, according to arrest warrants.

Ruggerio was charged with breaking and entering and larceny of a motor vehicle. He was being held on a $5,000 bond at the Guilford County jail in Greensboro Thursday night.

Staff writer Ryan Seals contributed to this report.
