MIAMI -- North Carolina assistant John Lovett is Miami's choice for defensive coordinator and could sign a contract by midweek, a Hurricanes athletic department official familiar with the hiring process said Monday.
The school is aiming to introduce Lovett on Wednesday, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
Miami coach Randy Shannon has indicated he wanted to make a hire within two weeks of the start of spring practice on Feb. 24
Lovett did not immediately return either an e-mail or phone call to his North Carolina office seeking comment.
Lovett has spent the last two years as a defensive assistant and special teams coach for the Tar Heels, and also has been defensive coordinator at Auburn, Clemson and Bowling Green. He's also a well-known recruiter, and has been credited by North Carolina coach Butch Davis in the past as someone with extensive knowledge of schools in the Southeast.
