BIG FOUR

DUKE

Biggest gets: Hillside HS teammates Desmond Scott and Corey Gattis stayed home to play in Durham. Scott, a SuperPrep All-American ranked No. 5 as an all-purpose back by rivals.com, rushed for 2,249 yards as a senior. Gattis, a QB in high school, will likely play elsewhere for the Blue Devils.

Biggest losses: LB Shayne Skov and OT Brennan Williams. The 6-foot-3, 235-pound Skov, a four-star recruit from Pawling, N.Y., took his No. 3 rivals.com ranking, his 4.62 speed in the 40 and his 3.5 GPA to Stanford. Losing four-star recruit Williams hurts, but losing him to North Carolina really, really hurts.

Sleeper: QB Sean Schroeder. The left-hander from California doesn't look old enough to get his driver's license, much less lead a Division I offense. But he put up solid numbers in high school, including a 3.9 GPA. And he's chosen to come east to play for David Cutcliffe, the guy who coached Peyton and Eli Manning.

Did the Blue Devils fill their needs? Yes. After so much losing in the last decade, the top need is still credibility. Getting a pair of highly rated local players to stay in Durham speaks volumes.

Signees (27): DB Lex Butler, 5-10, 175, Westside HS, Anderson, S.C.; LB August Campbell, 6-3, 215, Nassau, Bahamas; RB Walt Canty, 6-0, 220, Dorman HS, Roebuck, S.C.; DB Ross Cockrell, 6-0, 170, Charlotte Latin HS, Waxhaw; OL John Coleman, 6-5 280, West Florence (S.C.) HS; DL John Drew, 6-1, 315, Northside HS, Midland, Ga.; DL Jack Farrell, 6-2, 225, Holy Innocents HS, Atlanta; OL Joey Finison, 6-4, 280, Ragsdale HS; DL Justin Foxx, 6-3, 230, Charlotte Victory Christian School; LB Austin Gamble, 6-1, 230, Cypress Bay HS, Weston, Fla.; DB Corey Gattis, 5-11, 170, Hillside HS, Durham; LB Tyree Glover, 6-2, 240, Crescent City (Fla.) HS; DB Zach Greene, 5-10, 170, Leesville Road HS, Raleigh; DB Kyle Griswould, 5-10, 180, Shaw HS, Midland, Ga.; DL Ryan Hall, 6-3, 235, Olympia HS, Orlando, Fla.; OL Dave Harding, 6-4, 290, Boone HS, Orlando, Fla.; DB Garett Patterson, 6-0, 180, Monacan HS, Chesterfield, Va.; DL Brandon Putnam, 6-3, 240, Sandy Creek HS, Peachtree City, Ga.; LB Kevin Rojas, 6-3, 210, Wakefield HS, Raleigh; OL Sydney Sarmiento, 6-4, 265, West Florence (S.C.) HS; QB Sean Schroeder, 6-3, 185, Dana Hills HS, Laguna Niguel, Calif.; RB Desmond Scott, 5-10, 185, Hillside HS, Durham; OL Perry Simmons, 6-5, 260, Sanderson HS, Raleigh; RB Taylor Sowell, 5-11, 190, Dorman HS, Spartanburg, S.C.; DB Conner Vernon, 6-1, 180, Gulliver Prep, Miami; RB Tyree Watkins, 6-1, 195, Camden (N.J.) HS; RB Anthony Young-Wiseman, 6-1, 200, Walt Whitman HS, Bethesda, Md.

NORTH CAROLINA

Biggest get: QB Donavan Tate. The 6-foot-2, 205-pound son of former Georgia and Tampa Bay Buccaneers running back Lars Tate will start out as a quarterback, but he should make an impact wherever he plays and on whatever side of the ball. One fly in the ointment: He's a major-league baseball prospect and could be offered buckets of money.

Biggest loss: RB Desmond Scott. Tar Heels coach Butch Davis got most of the recruits he sought within North Carolina, but he lost the fast and versatile Scott, who opted to stay in Durham and play for -- gasp! -- Duke.

Sleeper: QB Bryn Renner. Maybe it's unfair to call a four-star recruit rated No. 5 at his position by rivals.com a sleeper, but Davis has said Tate will get first crack at playing quarterback in this recruiting class. Who knows? Renner could end up throwing passes to Tate some day.

Did the Tar Heels fill their needs? Yes. North Carolina put together a recruiting class ranked No. 8 in the nation by rivals.com, and the Heels did it by cleaning up in their home state.

Signees (29): WR Joshua Adams, 6-4, 200, Cheshire (Conn.) Academy, Cambridge, Mass.; LB Hawatha Bell, 6-1, 225, Butler HS, Charlotte; Ath A.J. Blue, 6-2, 225, Hargrave Military Academy (Chatham, Va.), Dallas, N.C.; OL Travis Bond, 6-7, Bertie County HS, Windsor; WR Jheranie Boyd, 6-2, 185, Ashbrook HS, Gastonia; TE Prizell Brown, 6-4, 260, Blinn (Texas) CC, Austin, Texas; DB D.J. Bunn, 6-0, 190, Smithfield-Selma HS, Smithfield; DB Curtis Campbell, 6-2, 205, Grassfield HS, Chesapeake, Va.; OL David Collins, 6-8, 300, East Forsyth HS; Ath Ray-Ray Davis, 6-1, 200, Sun Valley HS, Monroe; LB Justin Dixon, 6-1, 225, Smiithfield-Selma HS, Smithfield; OL Johnnie Farms, 6-3, 300, Perry (Ga.) HS; P C.J. Feagles, 6-0, 185, Ridgewood (N.J.) HS; RB Hunter Furr, 6-0, 205, Mount Tabor HS; DB Angelo Hadley, 6-0 ,190, Armwood HS, Seffner, Fla.; Ath Erik Highsmith, 6-3, 175, West Craven HS, Vanceboro; DB Josh Hunter, 6-2, 185, Mallard Creek HS, Charlotte; DB Mywan Jackson, 5-11, 175, Armwood HS, Seffner, Fla.; DL Jared McAdoo, 6-3, 295, Chapel HIll HS; WR Joshua McKie, 6-0, 185, Mauldin (S.C.) HS; DL Donte Moss, 6-4, 235, Northside HS, Jacksonville; LB Shane Mularkey, 6-2, 210, Greater Atlanta Christian Academy), Norcross, Ga.; LB Kevin Reddick, 6-3, 230, Hargrave Military academy (Chatham, Va.), New Bern; QB Bryn Renner, 6-3, 195, West Springfield (Va.) HS; RB Jerrell Rhodes, 5-10, 195, Jordan HS, Durham; DB Gene Robinson, 5-11, 175, Whitehaven HS, Memphis, Tenn.; DB Terry Shankle, 5-11, 175, South Stanly HS, Norwood; QB Donavan Tate, 6-2, 205, Cartersville (Ga.) HS; OL Brennan Williams, 6-7, 285, Catholic Memorial HS, West Roxbury, Mass.

N.C. STATE

Biggest get: CB Jarvis Byrd. The only four-star-rated player in this recruiting class, the 5-foot-10, 173-pound Byrd made just two recruiting visits and picked the Wolfpack over Wake Forest. Byrd also turned down an offer from Florida State.

Biggest loss: DE Donte Moss. Losing any five-star recruit hurts, but Wolfpack coach Tom O'Brien is known for developing linemen, and finishing second to North Carolina on the 6-foot-4, 235-pounder must sting.

Sleeper: Take your pick. N.C. State's recruiting class is loaded with two- and three-star players. How about DT Nathan Mageo? The Samoa native, who has already enrolled at State, comes to Raleigh from New Mexico Military Institute. As a junior college guy, he could step in and fill an immediate need.

Did the Wolfpack fill its needs? Maybe. Although the recruiting class isn't dazzling with the amount of stars next to players' names, that was O'Brien's M.O. at Boston College. Those teams won consistently with overlooked and underrated recruiting classes.

Signees (24): Ath Morgan Alexander, 5-11, 180, Cartersville (Ga.) HS; S Brandan Bishop, 6-2, 200, Boca Raton (Fla.) HS; CB Jarvis Byrd, 5-11, 180, Pahokee (Fla.) HS; DE Darryl Cato-Bishop, 6-4, 250, Lawrence Academy, Groton, Mass.; OL Tyson Chandler, 6-6, 340, North Plainfield (N.J.) HS; LB Ryan Cheek, 6-1, 230, Lancaster (Ohio) HS; OL Duran Christophe, 6-6, 285, Woodstock (Ga.) HS; DE Sylvester Crawford, 6-4, 225, Northside Christian Academy, Charlotte; LB Rickey Dowdy, 6-2, 225, High Point Central HS; DL A.J. Ferguson, 6-3, 250, South Brunswick HS, Southport; OL Denzelle Good, 6-6, 325, Gaffney (S.C.) HS; CB Dean Haynes, 5-11, 178, North Whitfield County HS, Tunnel Hill, Ga.; WR Quintin Payton, 6-4 190, T.L. Hanna HS, Anderson, S.C.; QB Everett Proctor, 6-2, 200, Jack Britt HS, Fayetteville; DT Raynard Randolph, 6-2, 320, Gwynn Park HS, Brandywine, Md.; LB Hans Rice, 6-2, 205, Eufaula (Ala.) HS; DT Deion Roberson, 6-3, 275, Tucker (Ga.) HS; DT Brian Slay, 6-3, 290, Stone Bridge HS, Ashburn, Va.; CB Rashard Smith, 5-11, 175, Dublin (Ga.) HS; TE Anthony Talbert, 6-4, 230, Winton Woods HS, Cincinnati; WR Bryan Underwood, 5-11, 170, Cleveland Heights HS, University Heights, Ohio; P Chris Ward, 6-1, 175, Starrs Mill HS, Fayetteville, Ga.; TE Asa Watson, 6-4, 225, Rock Hill (S.C.) HS; OL Camden Wentz, 6-3, 290, Lassiter HS, Marietta, Ga.

Already enrolled (4): S Donald Coleman, 6-0, 210, The Hun School (Princeton, N.J.), Detroit; OL Sam Jones, 6-7, 295, Hargrave Military Academy (Chatham, Va.), Fuquay-Varina; DT Nathan Mageo, 6-3, 285, New Mexico Military Institute, Pago Pago, American Samoa; RB James Washington III, 5-11, 185, Boone HS, Orlando, Fla.

WAKE FOREST

Biggest get: QB Brendan Cross. Chances are, the 6-foot-2, 198-pound kid from Georgia won't play this season. But a redshirt year behind Riley Skinner and Brett Hodges could sow the seeds of future stardom for a guy rivals.com ranks No. 35 in the country among pro-style quarterbacks.

Biggest loss: LB Hawatha Bell. The Deacons lost all three starting linebackers from last year's team, and getting the speedy Bell to come up I-85 from Matthews would've filled a need with a four-star talent. Instead, Bell picked North Carolina. Ouch.

Sleeper: WR Quan Rucker. With nine starters gone from last year's defense, it's an offensive guy who might sneak in and start as a true freshman. The speedy WR from Statesville picked Wake over N.C. State, Clemson and Virginia.

Did the Demon Deacons fill their needs? To be determined. The experts rank Wake's class as the second-worst in the ACC. But coach Jim Grobe's guys tend to stay four -- even five -- years, and he says this is "one of the most athletic classes we've put together."

Signees (18): OL Whit Barnes, 6-4, 270, Rocky Mount HS; DT Devin Bolling, 6-5, 270, Brookville HS, Lynchburg, Va.; WR Michael Campanaro, 5-10, 173, River Hill HS, Clarksville, Md.; QB Brendan Cross, 6-2, 198, Chattahoochee HS, Alpharetta, Ga.; DE John Gallagher, 6-4, 252, Nease HS, Ponte Vedra, Fla.; RB Josh Harris, 5-10, 190, Duncanville (Texas) HS; LB Justin Jackson, 6-1, 205, Richmond County HS, Rockingham; LB Duran Lowe, 5-11, 214, Plant City (Fla.) HS; DB Daniel Mack, 6-0, 196, Dad Christian School, Miami; TE-FB Matt Muncy, 6-4, 215, Richlands HS, Tazewell, Va.; P/K Jimmy Newman, 6-2, 195, Oxford (Ala.) HS; LB Mike Olson, 6-3, 215, Stone Bridge HS, Ashburn, Va.; DE Kris Redding, 6-4, 235, Whitefield Academy, Atlanta; WR Quan Rucker, 6-0, 185, West Iredell HS, Statesville; DT Frank Souza, 6-4, 285, Nease HS, Ponte Vedra, Fla.; DB Dominique Tate, 5-10, 180, Carver HS; DE Zach Thompson, 6-5, 250, Stone Bridge HS, Ashburn, Va.; LB Nikita Whitlock, 5-11, 245, Wylie (Texas) HS.

Already enrolled (3): TE-FB Tommy Bohanon, 6-2, 238, North Fort Myers (Fla.) HS; OL Steven Chase, 6-7, 270, Thomas Johnson HS, Frederick, Md.; DB Derald "D.J." Jones, 5-10, 162, First Coast HS, Jacksonville, Fla.

OTHER AREA SCHOOLS

ELON

Biggest gets: OL Jarrod Gant and DB Ronnie Hardison. Elon needed offensive linemen and defensive backs, and found one of each in Florida. Both were three-year letter winners and team captains in high school.

Sleeper: Jeremy Peterson. A QB at Reynolds High in Winston-Salem, the 5-foot-8, 165-pound Peterson's athleticism could get him on the field somewhere at Elon.

Did the Phoenix fill its needs? With just 15 players, it's a small recruiting class. "We were able to attract a quality group of young men," coach Pete Lembo said. "... I believe they will add to the strong chemistry that already exists in our program."

Signees (15): P/K Kenton Beal, 5-10, 190, Cape Coral (Fla.) HS; TE Gavin Billings, 6-5, 245, Nortwest Cabarrus HS, Kannapolis; DE/LB Brandon Brant, 6-1, 210, Southwest DeKalb HS, Stone Mountain, Ga.; DE Jay Brown, 6-4, 215, Riverwood HS, Sandy Springs, Ga.; FB Matt Eastman, 6-0, 220, Armwood HS, Tampa, Fla.; OL Jarrod Gant, 6-2, 290, Jefferson HS, Tampa, Fla.; DB Ronnie Hardison, 5-8, 160, Riverview HS, Sarasota, Fla.; LB Jordan Jones, 6-1, 210, Lakeland (Fla.) HS; LB Quinton Lightfoot, 5-11, 190, Florida State HS, Crawfordville, Fla.; Ath Jeremy Peterson, 5-8, 165, Reynolds HS, Winston-Salem; OL Mark Rehbein, 6-5, 275, Gonzaga HS, Alexandria, Va.; WR Rasaun Rorie, 6-0, 190, Anson County HS, Morven; DB Blake Thompson, 6-0, 180, Cardinal Gibbons HS, Elkridge, Md.; OL Dennis Wagner, 6-2, 280, Chancellor HS, Fredericksburg, Va.; DB David Williams, 5-8, 175, Thomas Dale HS, Chester, Va.

N.C. A&T

Biggest gets: First-year head coach Alonzo Lee made good on his promise to beat the local bushes for players by signing six Guilford County athletes -- Dudley QB Ricky Lewis Jr., the News & Record's player of the year, and fellow Panthers Darius Hall, Chris Neal and Tevin Williams.

Biggest loss: The Aggies went hard after Andrews WR Tony Washington, who signed with Appalachian State. The Aggies also failed to add needed depth to their LB corps.

Sleeper: Lee believes Northwest Guilford RB Chris Kennedy could see playing time this year. Kennedy rushed for more than 1,000 yards in each of his last two years for the Vikings. Another to watch is QB Lewis Kindle, who threw for 1,400 yards and 14 touchdowns as a senior at Westlake HS in Atlanta. Kindle picked the Aggies over Alcorn State.

Did the Aggies fill their needs? A&T accomplished its top priority by loading up on interior lineman -- four each on offense and defense. Lee hopes to bring in a few transfers or junior college players at LB.

Signees (22): DE Theo Agnew, 6-5, 230, Northwest Catholic HS, Windsor, Conn.; RB Antoinnialrose "Tony" Coles, 6-2, 230, West Hills (Calif.) CC, Oxon Hill, Md.; WR/DB Eldridge "Buster" Cooper Jr., 5-9, 180, North Atlanta HS; OL Daron Collins, 6-4, 280, Mallard Creek HS, Charlotte; K Patrick Courtney, 5-9, 140, San Gabriel HS, Pasadena, Calif.; DT/DE Darius Dawkins, 6-3, 280, Gaffney (S.C.) HS; Ath Kevin Fulton Jr., 6-3, 200, Milford Mill HS, Baltimore; P Alex Grubb, 6-0, 220, West Davidson HS; DT/DE Darius Hall, 6-2, 260, Dudley HS; DE/LB Brandon Hill, 6-1, 225, Salem HS, Conyers, Ga.; RB Chris Kennedy, 5-11, 185, Northwest Guilford HS; QB Lewis Kindle, 6-2, 180, Westlake HS, Atlanta; Ath Ricky Lewis Jr., 5-10, 170, Dudley HS; DB Isaiah Martin, 5-10, 180, Northside HS, Roanoke, Va.; OLB Tony Mashburn, 5-11, 205, Lincoln HS, Tallahassee, Fla.; DE Chris Neal, 6-1, 230, Dudley HS; OL Marcus Nelson, 6-5, 285, Christ School, Charlotte; RB Dontavius Payne, 5-8, 185, FAMU HS, Tallahassee, Fla.; LB Devin Ray Jr., 5-11, 220, Riverview HS, Tampa, Fla.; OL Timothy Sunkins, 6-4, 315, Coolidge HS, Washington; OL Richard Washington, 6-7, 330, Friendship HS, Washington; LB/S Tevin Williams, 6-1, 200, Dudley HS.

OTHER N.C. FBS

EAST CAROLINA

Biggest get: TE Justin Jones. The 6-foot-8, 252-pound receiver and blocker runs the 40 in 4.8 seconds. Rivals.com ranks the big kid from Conyers, Ga., 36th in the nation among tight ends.

Biggest loss: QB Danny O'Brien. Ranked No. 36 among pro-style quarterbacks by rivals.com, the East Forsyth standout turned down ECU and Duke to sign with Maryland.

Sleeper: G Will Simmons. The 6-5, 322-pound lineman drew interest from five ACC schools, but no offers. So he takes his size and 3.5 GPA to the Pirates.

Did the Pirates fill their needs? ECU coach Skip Holtz thinks so. "I feel that we answered our needs on both sides of the ball," Holtz said.

Signees (18): DT Jimmy Booth, 6-2, 288, J.H. Rose HS, Greenville; DT Michael Brooks, 6-3, 280, Bartlett Yancey HS, Roxboro; OL Jordan Davis, 6-3, 290, Choctawhatchee HS, Fort Walton Beach, Fla.; RB/DB Michael Dobson, 6-0, 185, Mount Airy HS; LB Ty Holmes, 6-1, 213, Lexington HS; WR Torrance Hunt, 5-8, 160, Jordan HS, Durham; QB Rio Johnson, 6-2, 185, Sandy Creek HS, Atlanta; TE Justin Jones, 6-8, 252, Heritage HS, Conyers, Ga.; LB Lamar McLendon, 6-0, 200, Seventy-First HS, Fayetteville; DE Matt Milner, 6-4, 235, Cardinal Gibbons HS, Raleigh; TE Zico Pasut, 6-3, 245, Ardrey Kell HS, Charlotte; LB Marke Powell, 6-3, 198, West Montgomery HS, Troy; WR Mike Price, 6-1, 165, New Bern HS; TE Korey Reynolds, 6-2, 240, Northwest Mississippi CC, Hoover, Ala.; RB Giavanni Ruffin, 6-1, 215, College of the Sequoias (Calif.), Virginia Beach, Va.; OL Will Simmons, 6-5, 280, Hertford County HS, Ahoskie; RB DaMonte Terry, 6-1, 203, Scotland HS, Laurinburg; WR Reese Wiggins, 5-11, 181, Southern Durham HS.
