Wake Forest wave continues in PGA as Lowe qualifies

Former Demon Deacon Cortland Lowe shot a 5-under 67 and survived a four-players-for-three-spots playoff to qualify for this weekend's Buick Invitational at Torrey Pines in La Jolla, Calif.

The Monday qualifier was held at El Camino Country Club in San Diego. Lowe's round of 67 tied for second with three other players.

Lowe played a practice round with former teammate Bill Haas on Tuesday and then will join fellow Wake Forest alum Webb Simpson for a practice round today.

Simpson, a PGA rookie, ranks 17th on the money list with $337,658 in earnings from three tournaments.

Women's lacrosse

DUKE: The Blue Devils were tabbed third in the nation in the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) preseason poll, the organization announced.

Four-time defending national champions Northwestern received 19 of 20 first-place votes at No. 1, followed by Syracuse at No. 2.

North Carolina was ninth.

Men's soccer

NORTH CAROLINA: Assistant coach Carlos Somoano was named one of the top 12 assistant coaches in collegiate soccer by College Soccer News. The seventh-year assistant was recognized for the fifth time in his career and fourth since joining the UNC staff.

Somoano also works with Raleigh's CASL program.

Baseball

CLINIC: The HiToms will sponsor a free clinic open to boys and girls ages six to 14 on March 14 at Finch Field.
