GREENSBORO — A city police officer has been suspended without pay after being accused of assaulting a woman.
A summons was issued Tuesday charging A.J. Blake, 32, with misdemeanor assault on a female.
Police said the alleged assault occurred early Saturday at the Greensboro Police Club at 524 Air Harbor Road.
Blake was off duty.
Kevin Bennett, president of the club and a detective with the police department, said the club was rented Friday night for a private party.
Blake was there as a guest. He is not a member of the club, Bennett said.
“Unfortunately we can’t control what goes on when we rent it out,” Bennett said.
The Greensboro Police Club is a philanthropic group that raises money for youth athletics and other community programs.
Blake joined the police department June 16, 2001.
He is currently assigned to the investigative bureau and his salary is $44,147. Police said the investigation is continuing.
