Never has patriotism been this sweet.
Krispy Kreme Doughnuts announced this morning that it will offer a free doughnut of choice to every customer on Inauguration Day, which is Tuesday.
"Krispy Kreme is taking the inaugural festivities nationwide," said Ron Rupocinski, executive chef for Krispy Kreme. "We're inviting our fans in cities across the country, including Washington, D.C., to commemorate this historic day with a favorite American treat."
The company, of course, is also hoping that you don't stop at just the one freebie. Companies typically roll out these sorts of "traffic generators" to get customers into their stores.
Not to be outdone, Dunkin' Donuts also announced today that it is rolling out a special new "Stars & Stripes" doughnut, a frosted doughnut decorated with red, white and blue star-shaped sprinkles. It will be available at participating Dunkin' Donuts shops nationwide for the suggested retail price of 89 cents Saturday through Tuesday.
"The launch of a new administration and a new year creates a unique spirit of anticipation, excitement and optimism, particularly among the hard-working people who keep this country running each and every day," said Frances Allen, brand marketing officer for Dunkin' Donuts. "We wanted to celebrate this special time with a doughnut, a beloved treat that any person can enjoy at an affordable price."
