Greensboro Youth Soccer will induct Major League Soccer standout Eddie Robinson and longtime coach and administrator Bob Singer into its hall of fame at a banquet Feb. 5 at the Koury Convention Center.

Robinson, a 30-year-old defender for the Houston Dynamo, played in Greensboro Youth Soccer programs from age 5 and also starred at Page High School and the University of North Carolina. He has been a pro for nine seasons and has been on four MLS Cup-winning teams.

Singer, a longtime youth coach, served two terms as GYS president from 1998-2001 and played a major role in the growth of the club. During his tenure as a board member and club president from 1996-2001, he was instrumental in the expansion of Bryan Park Soccer Complex with the construction of the fields at the Batten Annex. He also played a key role in bringing the US Youth Soccer Regionals to Greensboro, which helped build Bryan Park's reputation as one of the finest soccer facilities in the country.

Robinson and Singer will be the fifth and sixth members of the GYS Hall of Fame, joining Joseph M. Bryan Sr., Siri Mullinix, James Batten and William Utter. They will be honored at the induction banquet and silent auction to benefit the GYS Dues Assistance fund at 6:30 Feb. 5 at the Koury Convention Center. For information on the banquet, call the GYS office at 358-8030.

ISNER UPDATE: Greensboro's John Isner had 12 aces in a 7-6 (4), 7-5 win over seventh-seeded Albert Montanes of Spain in the first round of the Heineken Open on Monday.

Isner, who earned direct entry to next week's Australian Open when he won the USTA wild-card tournament, won three three-set matches in qualifying to get into the main draw at Auckland.

The 6-foot-9 Isner used his powerful serve to dominate Montanes, winning 75 percent of his service points and leaving his opponent with few chances to attack.

The American entered the tournament with a ranking of 144, down from his best of 88 midway through last year. He had only one double fault in two tight sets and seized on two of three break-point chances to edge Montanes, who converted only two of five break-point opportunities.

Isner won three-set qualifying matches against Switzerland's Michael Lammer, Ivan Navarro of Spain and Thomaz Bellucci of Brazil to reach the main draw of the ATP event.
