GREENSBORO — A local home was seriously damaged when a Christmas tree caught fire Friday night.

No injuries were reported in the fire at 1110 Cleburne St. in the city's Latham Park neighborhood. The father and son inside the one-story home were able to escape at 11:30 p.m. and call firefighters.

The home's owners are listed as David and Kristin Williams.

The Greensboro fire department blamed the fire on electrical lights on a live Christmas tree. The homeowner, according to the fire department, said the lights were about 15 years old.

The fire department estimated damage to the house and its contents at $150,000.

City fire officials recommend that residents keep their Christmas trees watered, remove them as soon as possible after Christmas and hang them with new lights.
