Ramin Farro bought a Powerball ticket in Greensboro in July and quickly forgot about it.
It was almost a costly mistake. But a friend came to the rescue in the nick of time.
Farro, who plays occasionally, bought the winning ticket in the July 9 drawing at a Wilco convenience store at 3800 Lawndale Ave. in Greensboro when he was visiting a friend.
He put the ticket away on his dresser at his Winterville home and forgot about it.
But his friend urged him to check his numbers after seeing recent media reports about a winning ticket sold at that same gas station that was about to expire.
With less than two business days to spare, Farro claimed his $200,000 winnings.
Farro called the North Carolina Education Lottery headquarters to confirm the numbers - 5, 7, 31, 49 and 53 - and then traveled to Raleigh on Friday to claim his prize.
He said he will use the money for investments and maybe take a vacation.
Farro had until 5 p.m. today to claim it.
Regarding tickets that expire, the Lottery Act designates that half of the amount be distributed to the Education Lottery Fund. The other half goes back into prizes for future games.
