Top-seeded Northwest girls cruise to easy win

NO. 1 NORTHWEST GUILFORD 50, NO. 8 GREENSBORO DAY 32: The Vikings (9-2) sprinted to a 17-4 edge after one quarter and led 29-12 at the half en route to a victory in the opening round of the Pizza Hut Invitational on Thursday at the Greensboro Coliseum Special Events Center.

Gretchen Bennett (14 points) was the only player in double figures for Northwest, which had 10 players in the scoring column.

The Vikings held a 10-0 advantage in second-chance points and a 30-6 edge in points in the paint.

"We came out real well," Vikings coach Darlene Joyner said.

Taylor Rush hit 10-of-12 free throws and led Greensboro Day with 17 points and 10 rebounds.

Greensboro Day (7-8) -- Kristin Rush 17, Brandi Coble 4, Aaron Pugh 3, Reid Soles 3, Samantha Brookshire 3, Kelly Carty 2.

Northwest Guilford (9-2) -- Gretchen Bennett 14, Alyssa Munson 7, Natalie Harper 6, Kelly Arnaud 4, Melisa Foures 4, Kaitlyn Shelton 4, Michelle Williams 4, Hannah McIntosh 3, Harmony White 2, Victoria McGee 2.

 

NO. 4 GRIMSLEY 32, NO. 5 NORTHEAST GUILFORD 27: Sophomore guard Tiana Bowden scored five points in the last three minutes to give Grimsley a victory over Northeast Guilford.

Bowden finished with three assists and 12 points, scoring key free throws down the stretch.

Coach Hank Bullard said Grimsley -- the defending tournament champions -- have had trouble making shots from free throw line this seaso

. "In a close game like that, you got to have that," Bullard said.

Grimsley's Ashley Lee finished with six points and two assists.

Northeast Guilford senior Talesa Milton scored 12 points a losing effort.

NO. 3 RAGSDALE 56, NO. 6 NORTHERN GUILFORD 38: Courtney Arrington led all scorers with 16 points and Dorian McInnis added 14 as Ragsdale advanced to face second-seeded Page.

A 3-pointer by Northern's Kelly Tessitore, who led the team with 15 points, tied the game at 21 three minutes before halftime, but Ragsdale went on an 8-2 run and never trailed by less than four again.

The Tigers pulled away in the fourth quarter by outscoring Northern 22-11. Lindsay Lee had 11 rebounds for Ragsdale, and Samantha Coffer blocked five shots for Northern.
