GREENSBORO - Authorities this morning closed southbound traffic at the Freeman Mill Road overpass at Spring Garden Street after an SUV crashed.

Fire and rescue workers used a device known as the "jaws of life" to remove the driver from the SUV.

The wreck occurred as the National Weather Service in Raleigh issued a winter weather advisory for the Triad. The advisory ended about 11:15 a.m.

The Freeman Mill Road bridge was covered with patches of ice at the time of the wreck.

Icy roads have caused several accidents in Rockingham County this morning, according to the Highway Patrol.

Troopers have responded to accidents on U.S. 29 south of Reidsville and U.S. 220 in the Madison/Mayodan and Summerfield areas. No serious injuries have been reported in any of the accidents, the Highway Patrol said.

Icy roads in western North Carolina have caused a number of accidents on Interstate 40.

Transportation officials reported multiple vehicle accidents on Interstate 40 from the Statesville area to the Tennessee state line. Officials said motorists in the area should expect delays and may want to use alternate routes.
