GREENSBORO — A plane that took off from Piedmont Triad International Airport Thursday afternoon crashed in Anson County on its way to Florida, according to Anson County Sheriff Tommy Allen.
Allen said calls for help came into his department at 3:02 p.m. A single engine plane with two seats crashed about 500 feet short of the runway at Anson County Airport.
The plane, Allen said, was registered to Steven P. Reamer , 57 , of Marriotsville , Md. He was the pilot and killed during the crash, Allen said.
His wife, Pamela , age 54 , was “very seriously injured” and airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.
“Witnesses said the motor was sporadic and sputtering,” Allen said Thursday night. “Apparently, he was having some kind of engine problems.”
According to witnesses, Allen said, it seemed as if Reamer was trying to land at the airport but could not make it.
Officials from the National Transportation Safety Board and FAA will try to determine what caused the crash. Allen said that flight plans showed the couple was on their way to Florida.
