ASHEBORO — A 16-year-old girl remains in jail today after the shooting death of another teen at an elementary school Friday night.
Asheboro police said Meredith Lynne Kandies, of 730 Rushwood Road, was charged with involuntary manslaughter and is in the Randolph County jail on a $30,000 bond.
The victim was identified as Jeremy Kevin McMillan, 16, of Franklinville.
Asheboro Police Chief Jim Smith said officers were called to Guy B. Teachey Elementary shortly after 10 p.m. Friday. Smith said officers found McMillan lying on the ground with a single gunshot wound to his stomach. An ambulance took him to Randolph Hospital. McMillan later died at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem.
Smith said the shooting followed a fight and then a struggle for a handgun. Smith did not know the reason for the altercation. Officers found the 9-mm pistol on the school grounds Saturday afternoon.
Smith said felony charges of possession of a weapon by a minor and possession of a weapon on school grounds are pending against Kandies. Both charges could be filed later today.
