Smith gets re-elected in Pleasant Garden

In a 4-1 vote Monday, the Pleasant Garden Town Council re-elected Nancy Jo Smith mayor pro tem.

Councilman Bob Wyrick cast the opposing vote, for himself.

Smith was first named mayor pro tem after the November 2007 town election.

The council also voted to give up on passing a trespass law agreement with wording that would let residents be on town property as long as they weren't doing anything illegal.

Lt. Cameron Piner of the Guilford County Sheriff's Office told the council that having a trespass law to keep individuals from participating in illegal activity on the town's property could also affect residents who may be on the property with permission.

The council first began discussing a trespass law agreement after several reports that human feces had been found in August on the picnic tables at the Town Hall.

Since then, several lights have been installed around the property and other measures taken to secure the property.

In other business, the council:

  • Formed a committee to plan some activities in Pleasant Garden in conjunction with the Greensboro Public Library's ongoing One City, One Book program.
  • Accepted the donation of a magnolia tree, which will be planted in front of the Town Hall.
  • Will hold a public meeting at 7 p.m. Feb. 3 at the Town Hall to give residents a chance to suggest ideas for what they would like to see in the town's 2009-10 budget.
