Winston-Salem newspaper cuts 12 jobs

WINSTON-SALEM — The Winston-Salem Journal is laying off 12 employees because of rough economic times.

The newspaper reported today that it will cut jobs in advertising and finance, among other departments. Most of the lost jobs will affect employees who build ads for local advertisers.

The newspaper said three employees were laid off immediately and nine others will be laid off between now and February. Affected employees will receive severance packages.

One of those let go was Mike Mulhern, who covered his last NASCAR race for the Journal last month. The paper has ended full-time staff coverage of stock car racing. Mulhern has covered NASCAR for 34 of his 35 years at the Journal.

Other cost-reduction measures include the elimination of the Homespotter real-estate publication, some page reductions in core newspaper products and cutbacks in marketing programs in the newspaper's circulation department.

Michael Miller, the Journal's president and publisher, said the job cuts will offset revenue lost in the current economic climate.

Lets hope that the people that were not affected by this in Winston, are still with a job because of their hard work and dedication, and not because of their skin color, unlike what has happened (many times) at another Piedmont based paper.

This is another sad example of the ongoing degradation of local journalism in this area.If you're a working journalist in this area trying to find work, forget it! I have...long ago. And if you're a fan of local news, the continuing cutbacks at local news outlets is stunning. From NBC-12 letting sports honcho Dave Goren go (but keeping traffic ditz Jennie Stencil on the payroll), our priorities are mixed up. Sad and stunning.
